Salty Boho - Meet two creative entrepreneurs!
As we started Salty Boho we wanted to remain subtle in the background. But as we grew and as the brand developed - the more we realised we ARE the brand. We live and breathe this brand. Therefore we find it crazy not to show you guys who we are, what we do and what our vision and mission is with this sweet baby - Salty Boho. Here we go!
Hello ladies, what are your names and where are you from?
Both: We are Malin (pronounced like Marlin the fish but with no R, any questions on that?) and Sofia. We’re from Sweden but do consider ourselves world citizens since home has been wherever we put our bags for the last 8 years.
Describe yourselves with 3 words!
Sofia: I'm a happy, adventure-seeking daydreamer.
Malin: Energetic, social and super expressive (I sound like a lunatic, I love yoga, and being quiet sometimes too).
Where do you live now and what do you do for a living?
Sofia: Recently came back to Sweden from living in Margaret River in Western Australia. Epic place with heaps of surf, vineyards and nature. Besides Salty Boho I work as a Freelancing Graphic Designer, a true digital nomad!
Malin: Just returned to Sweden after a summer spent in Cornwall, South England. It truly is a well kept secret down there, magical surf, happy people and beautiful landscape (and men with british accents). I also freelance as a Digital Communicator with a passion for text, clean design and capturing the beauty of the world through my camera lens.
What are your favourite places to 1. Work from 2. Travel to?
1. Holland, Amsterdam. I love this city. Its full of creative people, happenings and has got a great happy spirit. It makes me more creative and super inspired!
2. New Zealand (read Malins explanation below) and Bali. I’ve been there so many times, I literally know the island inside out. So many amazing little hidden spots, nice people and great surf.
1. Sri Lanka, as I love the warmth, both from the people and the weather, the simple living, its magnetic powers to gather creatives from all over the world in one place and the waves. It is paradise on earth!
2. New Zealand. That place has really got it all! The fact that you can go skiing, bungee jumping and surfing is just amazing, you just can’t beat it. And Hawaii, I (we) love Hawaii!
How do you know each other and why are you the greatest team alive?
Both: We knew of each other from the age of 17 where we briefly ran into each other on different adventures. Then we sort of had to get to know each other when we were 19 and moved into a tiny room in Oslo, Norway together with one more friend to work and save money for our first travel (that Sofia initiated). Since then we have explored Southeast Asia, Borneo, Bali, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Hawaii, California, Europe and all corners of the world together.
Why we’re the greatest team alive? Because we think the same yet we have different qualities to compliment each other in the process of making things happen. Sofia is a bit more structured, and has got a killer Graphic Design and creative mind and Malin loves text, communication and all things pretty.
Why did you start Salty Boho, what is Salty Boho to you?
Both: After a lot of dreaming, this was actually Sofia’s idea, she sort of put the website and brand together and sent Malin a message saying, we’re doing this! And from there we got this idea to start selling our rings that we found travelling and go from there. To us, Salty Boho is where we get to communicate and promote a lifestyle and way of life that we didn’t know existed until we started living it ourselves.
Malin: I remember feeling like I had heard about people freelancing, surfing and travelling at the same time, but who were they and how did they do it? I didn’t really have a role model for this as universe pulled me on to this track of life.
Both: With Salty we hope to inspire others to take a step out of their comfort zone, to actually feel, recognize and learn what makes them happy and what their heart truly desires and GO DO THAT.
What can we expect in the future from Salty Boho?
Both: Great things!!!
Sofia: It’s funny, as without knowing both of us have painted this picture in our heads of Salty Boho in a small space in the heart of Gothenburg, Sweden (hey, you gotta start somewhere), with white painted walls, full of beautiful ocean prints, palm trees and freelancing desks, a small café with the most amazing coffee and seats for other freelancers to come in, work, network, hold workshops and have fun with us!
Malin: Let’s just say that we could sit down for days and dream about all the things we would like to do in the future, but yes, we hope to do some workshops for smaller brands and female entrepreneurs, start a freelance office, a café, run the world etc.
If you could go back in time 5 years and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Sofia: Trust in yourself. You are so much more valuable than you think! As a freelancers/small business owners it's really hard in the beginning to believe in yourself and see you're actual worth. In order for others to believe in you, you need to believe in yourself. So let everyone know that you’re a freaking superstar and an expert in what you're doing, and they’ll follow!
Malin: Trust the process. There truly is a reason for every person, experience and challenge you meet along your way. It is so beautiful when all of a sudden it all comes together and makes sense, how you ended up where you are and to realise you have been exactly where you had to be the whole time. And to doubt is healthy. People who has got all the answers scares me!
Finally, life mottos/rules to live by/rules to break etc, do you have any?
Sofia: I got hot sauce in my bag - SWAG!
Malin: Be a spiritual badass: Send out love to strangers, always seek out the lesson and know that happiness is a choice.
THIS OR THAT (let’s see how this “greatest team” actually works)
Coffee or tea? A good espresso. Every damn day!
Snowboarding or Surfing? Haha is that even a question? We’d surf every day all day if we could. (Sofia doesn't really agree here as she’s an old snowboarder but broke her foot in New Zealand, so she physically can’t snowboard every day, therefore we decided to go with surf).
Burger or Taco? This is where we go our separate ways. Malin likes would kill for a good fish taco with a Corona and Sofia really likes her hipster burgers with a pale ale.
Netflix or Youtube? Oh another tricky one. Sofia is a Youtuber since young age and knows Youtube like her own backpocket. (Sofia: There are so many awesome people to discover on Youtube, people share great content and there are so many tutorials to learn new cool things, for free. I LOVE IT). Yet we both love documentaries and binge watching Stranger Things, so we will probably have to go with Netflix. Also Malin is scared of Youtube, (still can’t get my head around the fact that like 2 million people likes to watch someone play a video game while they comment on it. Why?!).
Bikini or Suit? Bikini. Every damn day. YEEW
